Its local neighbours are Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces, and it shares a 4,000 kilometer border with India, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. Covering an area of more than 1.2 million square kilometers, the region constitutes about one eighth of China’s territory.
